Jigger
A jigger is an indispensable tool for the budding bartender. If you've looked at many jiggers, you might get confused over exactly what it is you are measuring, since they rarely (if ever) actually list the measurements on the side, or even on the packaging.
A traditional jigger is a double sided device. With a large measure on one end, and a smaller one on the other. The larger measure is usually (but not always) 1-1/2 ounces, and is called a "jigger". The smaller side is usually (but not always) 1 full ounce, and is referred to as a "pony".
It can be a common misconception that a professional bartender doesn't need to use a jigger. Actually it will often be the most professional of bartenders who you will still see using a jigger, because they know just how important it is to properly measure the ingredients when making a properly balanced cocktail. When you are talking about a collection of ingredients that measures only 3 to 4 ounces, even the smallest difference in measures can make a very big difference in the resultant tast.
What and Where to Buy
A good jigger will have a well formed lip that will pour a clean stream into the cocktail shaker or glass. It is amazing how much of a mess you can make with a poorly designed jigger when you are trying to make cocktails quickly.
Some cocktail jiggers include a handle of some sort attached to them. This can make them just a little more akward to deal with, but with a little practice it is easy to get the hang of. One benefit of the handle, is that if you do happen to slop some cordials on the side of the jigger, it keeps your fingers from getting sticky.
