Coffee Cocktail
  • 1 1/2 ounces port
  • 1 1/2 ounces brandy
  • 1 tsp simple syrup
  • 1 whole egg
  • dash of bitters
Shake hard with ice. Strain into a wine glass. Garnish with grated nutmeg.
If the thought of using raw egg in your cocktails gives you some concern, you can instead use one of the liquid egg substitutes, which are essentially pasturized egg whites.
Coffee Cocktail
DrinkBoy Says: While none of the old recipes I've found for this drink include "Bitters" as an ingredient, I feel that it really does improve this drink.

With a name like "Coffee" cocktail, I'm sure you are expecting such a drink to be not only a heart-warming hot drink, but also to use Coffee as one of its ingredients. Unfortunately you'll see that you'll be disappointed on both accounts. Fortunately, I doubt that you'll be disappointed if you give it a try.

For several years now, I've been running across this recipe in countless of old cocktail books from right around the time of prohibition. The combination of Port, Brandy, and raw egg seemed just a little bit strange, and there was always some other ancient cocktail that was higher on my list to check out. After all, there are only so many different cocktails that I can try in a sitting and still have some idea what I'm trying.

Then one day, a bartender friend of mine in New York did a short video on making the Coffee Cocktail, and it inspired me to finally pull things together and give this recipe a try myself. After a little experimentation, I settled on a slightly different recipe then she gives in her video, but either way I think this cocktail is a great drink with just a slightly sweet and frothy texture that is remenicent of a Ramos Gin Fizz or Egg Nog.

While this drink doesn't include any coffee in it, when properly made it will look just a little bit like a Cafe Au Lait.

If you want to check out my friend Audrey mixing one of these drinks up, you can hopefully still catch her video on YoNewYork (http://www.yonewyork.com) by clicking here
