A tasting guide to American Bourbon & Rye Whiskeys
This compact handbook of American Whiskeys is usefull both as an introduction to Bourbon & Rye Whiskey in general, as well as a good source of reference for building up your own "Whiskey Library".
I found the tasting notes to often be as captivating as the whiskies themselves. For one whiskey, that notes read "The nose does little to get you to drink this one. Yet I love the youthful, fizzing attack as it crashlands on to the tastebuds. A whisky which grows on you." I'll leave it up to you to figure out which particular bottling this comment is about, and I'll also leave it up to you for deciding if Mr. Murray is trying to be kind with his comments or not.
After covering the necessary background information on the history of American Whiskey, Mr. Murray jumps in to a line up of all the distilleries, and their bottlings. The categorization breaks these down into Bourbon, "Tennessee Whiskey", "Rye Whiskey", "Corn Whiskey", and finally "Blended Whiskey". Each Distillery is given a well written introduction about their relationship to the industry as well as often some other additional insights that the author has encountered. Then each of the distilleries bottlings are identified and tasting information is provided, some more noteworthy then others.
