by: David A. Embury
1948, reprinted 1952, 1958
Doubleday
One of the first, and still one of the best, books that truely examines the art of the cocktail
This book is an important addition to any cocktail library. It represents a clean, concise, and very personable examination of how to really make a great cocktail.
Mr. Embury states up front, that he is not, and never has been a professional bartender, or even employed in the liquor industry in any form. However, his knowledge and opinionated commentary indicate that this is a man who knows his drink, and a Quality one at that.
Many of the recipes provided include some form of additional information from the author, either regarding their history, or descriptions of how to really make this cocktail in the best manner possible. This sort of additional information is an element that is seriously missing from many of the modern cocktail books.
This book also includes one of the first known references to the Kangaroo Cocktail, which is the proper name for a Vodka Martini.
