A great collection of cocktails and cocktail information by somebody who obviously is passionate about the subject.
The first thing that struck me about this book, is that the author (Paul Martin) brings himself into the book. For books that focus on providing a large quantity of recipes (this volume has over 2500 different recipes), this is indeed rare. Usually they barely have the room to cover the key concepts and overviews of equipment and ingredients before jumping into the recipe listings.
Paul lets the reader know right up front, who he is, and why he is passionate about cocktails. He shares with the reader his personal opinions about cocktails in general, as well as on a handfull of specific "classic" cocktails. While I don't necessarily agree with all of his opinions, I still enjoy reading about them.
In the rest of the book, he covers a very large collection of recipes. And unlike other recipe books that list the drinks in either alphabetical order, or by their base spirit, Paul lists his on the "category" of the drink. The categories start out with "Traditional Style Cocktails", "Long Mixed Drinks", "Short Mixed Drinks", "Blended Cocktails", and then he goes on to cover smaller categories such a shooters, hot drinks, flips, and others.
In this single volume, you will find almost everything you need to get yourself started in mixing, and enjoying cocktails at home.
